We believe that in some circumstances it's important to consider having a full assessment, possibly also a formal psychiatric diagnosis. These are some of the reasons:
Although you may accept in theory the possibility of having a body image disorder, at another level you may need convincing by an assessment of whether you have this disorder or not. With BDD this is more complex than with many other disorders since the nature of BDD is to perceive that the issue is physical, not psychological.
Assessment and diagnosis may be the first step in getting appropriate treatment for your condition (especially if you are hoping to get help through the NHS). Sometimes Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG's) or Psychiatric Services are willing to fund an assessment prior to determining what treatment to offer you. If you are already in therapy (either privately or through the NHS) this may help your therapist focus therapeutically on your difficulties.
Rapid treatment of body image concerns may prevent the escalation of your symptoms. Getting appropriate talking therapy (CBT or psychotherapy) and in some cases, pharmacological treatment, can make a huge difference to outcomes. The therapeutic choices you have will depend on the duration, severity and extent of your existing symptoms, your age and your circumstances.
